The 12th annual AMGA conference was held at the Sam Houston State University Ag Complex in Huntsville, Texas, on Friday and Saturday, June 13-14, 2003.
This is the one time each year where production meat goat producers can gather to demonstrate the relative quality of their animals.
All goats were sifted for compliance with the AMGA Selection Standards as they were unloaded into the pen area. One hundred seventy nine goats survived the sift.
Friday morning was reserved for check-in and visiting - This is the only opportunity all year for some of the attendees to meet each other.
The Anonymous Show started at 3:00 PM. Dr. Frank Craddock judged the goats as production animals and not on their ability to be lead around the ring on a leash and to stand still. The goats were let loose in the ring, a full class at a time, while the owners waited at ringside. Dr. Craddock judged each animal on structure, meat characteristics, and on visual estimation of reproduction capabilities.

A Goat Industry Round Table is being planned. A joint meeting of AMGA, the Boer registries, dairy, cashmere, and mohair associations will be held August 7-9, 2003, in Chicago, IL. This meeting will be facilitated by the USDA/NSIIC.
Board member Sam Beaumont presented a motion to amend the constitution of the AMGA. The amendment would reserve two board positions for members outside of the state of Texas. Discussion revealed that there is no current protocol for conference call, email, or other electronic board meeting attendance. The motion was tabled pending resolution of the meeting attendance problems.
The 2003 Willie B Whitehead memorial scholorship was presented by Eddie Andrews to Junior Member Stephanie Ramirez from Gonzales, Texas.
Nominations were solicited from the floor to fill expiring board positions. No remote nominations had been received. The members filling the current board positions were re-nominated by various floor members and voted to additional terms.
The annual award for outstanding contribution to the meat goat industry was presented by Burt Young to Keith Smith.
The meeting adjourned.
